Sometimes the right tool for the job is a convenient and simple one (wish it was always the case). That is why, I wanted to mention seven free network management utilities that could make your daily IT/network tasks a bit easier.

These stand alone network management utilities provide monitoring solutions for specific problem areas like servers, applications, website traffic and much more.  You can use these utilities right from your desktop without the need to launch a full blown management program.

The series of utilities has logged over 100,000 downloads, so you might find them valuable as well.  Try them out and let me know what you think.

1. LaunchPAD - Access Network Tools Quickly

2. Exchange Monitor – Monitor Exchange Health

3. Device Monitor – Troubleshoot Device Problems

4. Syslog Alarm Monitor - Monitor Most Alarmed Devices

What Do You Like in a Network Diagram?

Posted on - 18 comments

Came across an interesting website while reading a Tech Republic blog post that lets you rate other networking professional’s network diagrams or upload your own for review by your peers.

The site is a  free resource. It is designed to let people learn about networking and network documentation by seeing what other people have done with their networks. The ratings are based on the functionality of the diagrams and not their graphic design. The site also includes a forum where users can collaborate and interact.

Take a look at the diagrams and see what you think. I thought it was a great resource for the networking community.

Want to use your network diagrams to enhance your network management efforts? Our software, dopplerVUE helps you create network maps in minutes so you can get a complete view of your entire network.

The solution automates map updates with additions and deletions as the network changes without administrative effort. It also lets you place background images within the network topology (e.g. Visio office floor plans, satellite earth images and more) for a more detailed representation of your network.

Here is a screenshot of a global network map using dopplerVUE. If you like what you see download a free trial version.

The Internet in 2025 – What Will the World Be Like?

Posted on - 14 comments

The Internet continues to evolve from today's 2 billion users and $3 trillion market. Any ideas on what it will be like in the year 2025? Is your glass half full or half empty?

Cisco and the Monitor Group recently published a report on the different paths the Internet could take over the next 15 years. They layout four scenarios:

FLUID FRONTIERS: A world in which the Internet becomes pervasive and centrifugal. Technology continues to make connectivity and devices more and more affordable (in spite of limited investment in network build-out) while global entrepreneurship - and fierce competition - ensure that the wide range of needs and demands from across the world are met quickly and from equally diverse setups and locations.

INSECURE GROWTH: A world in which users - individuals and business alike - are inhibited from intensive reliance on the Internet. Relentless cyber attacks driven by wide-ranging motivations defy the preventive capabilities of governments and international bodies. Secure alternatives emerge, but they are expensive.

SHORT OF THE PROMISE: A frugal world in which prolonged economic stagnation in many countries takes its toll on the spread of the Internet. Technology offers no compensating breakthroughs, and protectionist policy responses to economic weakness make matters worse - both in economic terms and with regard to network technology adoption.

BURSTING AT THE SEAMS: A world in which the Internet becomes a victim of its own success. Demand for IP-based services is boundless, but capacity constraints and occasional bottlenecks create a gap between the expectations and reality of Internet use.

I’m hopeful the Internet will evolve as a fluid fronter where more and more network management solutions are needed smile  But I’m sure security, economic and technology issues will cause us the usual headaches.

How do you think things will play out? Let me know.
